One of the leading lights of Hungarian cinema, Jancso, is responsible for this bleak and revealing look at the ironies of politics. In 1930s Hungary, anarchist Charrier is sought by the government but feared by his leftist comrades because of his violent tendencies. In time, the leftists decide to kill Charrier to create a useful martyr. Jancso's style is extremely harsh, consisting of a minimum of shots that can be hard to watch but that make their points powerfully.
