From its ominous opening to its spectacular climactic stunt, the hypnotic precursor to director Tom Tykwer's RUN LOLA RUN is a quieter but creepier affair. Set in a breathtakingly picturesque German ski village during the snowy winter months, the film opens with a series of phone calls introducing the five major characters, three of whom know each other quite well. Nurse Laura (Marie-Lou Sellem) nurse who shares her cozy mountain home with Rebecca (Floriane Daniel), a translator of trashy German romance novels; womanizing ski-instructor Marco (Heino Ferch is Rebecca's self-centered, sulky boyfriend. The other two characters are complete strangers, who will alter the destinies of everyone involved. Local farmer Theo (Josef Bierbichler) is en route to the vet with his sick horse; his young daughter has hidden in the horse trailer behind his car. Rene (Ulrich Matthes) is a movie projectionist who, while walking past Laura's house, impulsively steals Marco's sports car and nearly collides head-on with Theo. Theo swerves and the trailer jackknifes, crushing the little girl. Rene walks away from the crash with hardly a scratch and no memory of the accident; the same old head injury that left an omega-shaped scar on the back of his head stole his short-term memory. Theo, meanwhile, goes in search of the man with the tell-tale scar, whom he blames for his daughter's death and believes to be Marco. Far less kinetic than the adrenaline-pumped LOLA, this film is equally engrossing, thanks to Tykwer's uncanny ability to insert the spectator into the action and, by extension, the film's metaphysical design. From the myopic characters whose color-coordinated wardrobes also happen to match their environments, to the way in which fate boomerangs in an unfathomable stroke of cosmic irony, Tykwer hints at some grand pattern, but his film remains intriguingly elusive. leave a comment --Ken Fox
