Pidgeon is a decent man and a writer of schoolbooks living in an English village who befriends a pregnant girl, even though he loses his own wife in the process. When the girl dies, there is a coroner's hearing to judge whether she committed suicide or Pidgeon poisoned her. His devotion causes him to lose his job and his community standing. He is cleared in the finale and becomes free to pursue his real love, Kerr. A.S.M. Hutchinson's romantic tearjerker with a WW I background, originally made into a film in 1923, here has been updated to WW II. It offers a delightful look at screen newcomer Janet Leigh, at the age of 20, making her second feature film. leave a comment
