Pidgeon is a decent man and a writer of schoolbooks living in an English village who befriends a pregnant girl, even though he loses his own wife in the process. When the girl dies, there is a coroner's hearing to judge whether she committed suicide or Pidgeon poisoned her. His devotion causes him to lose his job and his community standing.
