Jacoby, a high school track star, is not quite fast enough to beat his rival, Wahler, the leader of an opposing gang. The 1960s setting allows the writers to bring in a character who pals around with Jacoby and is killed in Vietnam. His death compels Jacoby into trying harder, eventually emerging as the number one runner.
