Windy City: Review

A film with a lot of heart that, unfortunately, never gels as a whole. Danny Morgan (John Shea) is a postman-struggling writer in love with two people: Emily Reubens (Kate Capshaw), his ex-girl friend who is about to be married, and Sol (Josh Mostel), his best friend slowly dying from leukemia. In the rambling story (told in a series of flashbacks), Danny learns to cope with his pal's impending death, his own angst, and his longing for Emily. Shea is excellent as a young man caught between his different loyalties. Mostel and Capshaw are equally fine as the two closest to him. Where the movie falters is in the myriad of flashbacks. Rather than trying to evoke feelings with cinematic style, first-time director Armyan Bernstein should have stuck with the story of his three leads. When he concentrates on the relationships, this is a sweet, never overly sentimental film. Bernstein shot this in his native Chicago, using locations all over town to evoke the feeling of one big neighborhood. This, along with the picture's autumn setting, give a warm nostalgic feeling to the story. WINDY CITY is the sort of movie one can't help but like despite its often-confusing style. leave a comment
