Windows

1980, Movie, R, 96 mins

WINDOWS was the directorial debut of cinematographer Gordon Willis, who photographed many of Woody Allen's films. As in the superbly picturesque MANHATTAN, Willis captures the feeling of New York City here, but he can do little with Barry Siegel's script--a psycho-thriller with sexual overtones. Talia Shire is the object of the perverse obsession of her lesbian neighbor, Elizabeth Ashley, who spies on Emily as she begins a relationship with detective Joseph Cortese. Nothing gels here, because the screenplay provides no logic or motivation. Only the camerawork (by Willis) and score (by Ennio Morricone) stand out.
