Finch is an idealistic, pacifist doctor running a small hospital in the village of Selim in northern Malaya. His estranged wife, Ure, arrives to try to patch up their failing marriage, but he doesn't seem interested, being more concerned with his fledgling affair with native nurse Parry.
Political unrest increases in this tropic locale as native workers go on strike against rubber-plantation owners. The conscientious doctor at first tries to mediate the dispute, but when the owners begin repressive measures backed by government policemen, he hides union leader Cairney in his
