In this unusual effort for director Ray, Plummer plays an alcoholic conservationist with the Audubon Society in the early 1900s. He's trying to protect the Florida Everglades from both real estate developers and poachers who are killing some of the wildlife. Certain plumed birds are in particular demand, since their tail feathers are used to decorate fashionable hats for women. Ives is the poachers' leader, engaging in a head-to-head battle with Plummer. Eventually Plummer is able to capture Ives, but the outlaw hunter is killed before Plummer can turn him over to authorities. The film has some engaging moments, but Budd Schulberg's script meanders into varying subplots that hamper the overall drama of the story. Lee provides some fine comic moments as the madam of a brothel Plummer frequents. At best, though, this is a curio in both Schulberg's and Ray's filmographies. Falk, who would later star in the television series "Columbo," makes his film debut in a minor supporting role. leave a comment
