With its striking simplicity, WHEN THE WIND BLOWS is a moving parable of nuclear holocaust. Told through animation, the story follows a retired English couple, James Bloggs (voiced by John Mills) and his wife, Hilda (voiced by Peggy Ashcroft), as they face the postnuclear winter in a small cottage in the British countryside. World tensions have been building, according to radio reports, and war is imminent. When the bomb goes off, destroying the England James and Hilda love so dearly, they are convinced the situation is merely a temporary crisis and, like WWII, one they can stick out until things get back to normal. Gradually, radiation begin taking its toll on the couple, and small but important details of their lives start to slip out of their control. These developments are handled with a gentle, sympathetic humor that subtly brings out the hopelessness of their plight. Mills and Ashcroft are perfectly cast in their cartoon roles. The variety of animation styles frequently produces captivating visual effects. WHEN THE WIND BLOWS is an eloquent vision of the ultimate tragedy. leave a comment
