If not an affair to remember, this light-hearted romance's combination of fairy-tale plot elements and an attractive cast adds up to a generally pleasant, if ultimately forgettable, diversion. Hollywood bad-boy Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel) is notorious for his carousing, drinking, smoking and all-around reckless behavior. In hopes of cleaning up Tad's image and helping him land better parts, Tad's agent (Nathan Lane) and manager (Sean Hayes) — who, curiously, are both named Richard Levy — concoct a plan to send their client out for a media-friendly date with an adoring fan. The $100 entry fee will, of course, go to Hamilton's favorite charity, Save the Children. West Virginia girl-next-door Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth), persuades her coworkers and local Piggly Wiggly employees and customers to help her raise the entry fee so she can compete for a night out with her very favorite movie star. Small-town sweetie Rosalee is stunned when she actually wins the dream date. She's whisked to Los Angeles for the evening of a lifetime, but the Hollywood scene is so intimidating that she spends most of the evening awestruck and awkward. The normally self-centered Tad is taken with her refreshing behavior and quaint colloquialisms, like "Yikes-a-be," one of her expressions for surprise/delight. He decides he wants some of her unspoiled goodness to rub off on him, and makes the trek to her hometown, Fraziers Bottom, W.Va., hoping she'll help him get his priorities straight. Everyone in town, including Rosalee's best girlfriend, Cathy (Ginnifer Goodwin), is thrilled that a big movie star is pining after their hometown girl. Everyone, that is, except Rosalee's very best friend, Pete Monash (Topher Grace): He's been harboring a secret crush on Rosalee since forever, and having to compete with a world-class celebrity just doesn't seem fair. It's thoroughly believable that two men would be vying for the affections of Bosworth's Rosalee, with her sunny blonde hair and effortless charm, and Grace (of TV's That '70s Show) delivers an understated but perfectly timed comic performance. Though it lacks the sharp cleverness of director Robert Luketic's debut, LEGALLY BLONDE (2001) and borrows liberally from the classic BYE BYE BIRDIE (1963), this sweet trifle is infinitely more enjoyable than the gross-out romantic comedies that proliferated in the wake of THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (1998). leave a comment --Angel Cohn
