It now pales a bit compared to Tim Burton's superior version of Roald Dahl's beloved children's book, but it's still a sentimental favorite. Adapted by Dahl himself, this marvelous adventure creates a world that's about as close to heaven as any kid can imagine. Legendary candy maker Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) hides five golden tickets in his candy bars; whoever finds them wins a tour of his top-secret chocolate factory — if they follow the rules. Most of them don't, of course, and suffer an assortment of wickedly imagined fates. The film is a little dark in tone, but it's one of those rare children's fantasies that doesn't talk down to its young audience. Go Veruca Salt!
