Producer George Lucas' long-awaited WILLOW was shrouded in secrecy from its inception, and, as it turns out, for very good reason: the script is a blatant rewrite of STAR WARS. The distressingly familiar story is set in a magical land sometime during prehistory, when trolls, brownies, fairies, and sorcerers are the order of the day. A newborn girl destined to overthrow the evil empire is rescued from the wicked sorceress and found by the Newlyns, a society of little people. Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) must return the child to the land of the Daikinis (regular-sized people). Thus begins a lengthy quest that takes Willow into the realm of the Daikinis, as he attempts--despite attacks from the forces of darkness--to reach the castle of Tir Asleen, where the child will grow up to fulfill the prophecy. Lucas has tried to recapture the magic of STAR WARS here, but this time he is content merely to parrot the earlier movie for his characters and plot. Every aspect of WILLOW seems as if it were written in stone before a shot was filmed. The plot grinds on inescapably to its predictable climax, with the viewer fully aware of what awaits long before the events unfold.
