Director-writer Paul Mazursky creates a light, pleasant situation but never really gets at what makes his characters tick. Michael Ontkean and Ray Sharkey become incredibly close friends, not even allowing their mutual attraction to Margot Kidder to interfere with their friendship. Though Kidder is fond of both men, and they feel the same about her, she marries Ontkean. Then the setting switches from New York to California, the marriage fails, and Kidder takes up with Sharkey. WILLIE AND PHIL looks like a glossy remake of JULES ET JIM (one scene even uses a portion of George Delerue's score from that movie), though it lacks all the cinematic subtleties and human insights that fill Francois Truffaut's film. It is almost impossible not to like the characters, which makes it all the more irritating to watch them make fools of themselves. leave a comment
