Aging cowboy Holden and young O'Neal star as a pair of big, bad, but lovable ranch hands, employed by Malden, who are tired of their pointless existence. They decide to rob a bank in the hope that it'll ignite a spark in them. They are soon on the run from a posse headed by Malden's two
sons, Skerritt and Baker, who chase them along their way to Mexico. The downbeat ending has both men killed. The actors try as best they can with the uneven script--Holden extends his WILD BUNCH persona, and O'Neal tries to hide his LOVE STORY role--but some rather obvious symbolism and the
unavoidable comparison to BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID hurt this Blake Edwards film.
