Fonda was coming off the high of having worked with Preston Sturges on THE LADY EVE and was understandably disappointed when Zanuck put him into this mediocre adventure set in the 1890s. He's a lumberjack with a yen to see the world so he quits his job and travels to Seattle, where he tries to find his old pal, William, a con artist with a lust for life equaling Fonda's. He searches for William and meets Bennett, a happy-go-lucky dancer who works in one of the many saloons that dot the Seattle waterfront. Fonda and Bennett are soon mad about each other, but she doesn't have the heart to tell him that she used to be the main squeeze of William. Fonda and Bennett marry and all seems well. Meanwhile, Fonda is not the only person looking for William. It seems that William used some loaded dice to win a ramshackle hotel away from tough MacLane, and if MacLane finds him, William may not survive. Fonda eventually does locate William and the trio takes off for Alaska. William sees how much in love the two of them are and keeps his mouth shut about his one-time affair with Bennett. In Alaska, William asks Fonda to help in running the old hotel won from MacLane but Fonda prefers the free and easy outdoor life of the lumberjack after first helping William get out of MacLane's clutches. Bennett and Fonda move into a rough-hewn cabin in the wilderness, then Bennett befriends local hooker Munson, who has exactly what you'd expect, a heart of gold. Bennett is in town, notes MacLane, and goes to William to tell him to beware. William can't resist stealing a kiss from Bennett, which happens just as Fonda walks in. He is ready to leave his wife but stays when he learns that they are to have a child. Fonda no longer trusts his wife in the same way, even though she has been honest with him. Bennett is in heavy labor and Fonda goes to town to find the local sawbones. While there, MacLane sees him, and shoots and wounds him. William arrives and kills MacLane, then he and Munson get into a small boat and make it across raging waters to the cabin in the wilderness. Munson aids Bennett in the birth, and William tells Fonda that he is totally guilty of having forced himself on Bennett. All is forgiven and Fonda settles down to the life of a father and husband and will no longer heed the wild geese who formerly called him to make the annual trip to wherever. A tedious film that might have been exciting if directed at a swifter pace than Brahm used. leave a comment
