The Wild Blue Yonder: Review

The launching of the B-29 Superfortress was the main reason behind this WW II picture starring Corey and Tucker as a pair of Army Air Corps officers assigned to bomb a South Pacific target. On the ground each tries to get Army nurse Ralston interested in him, but in the air their sights are set on the war. Tucker's nerves weaken before takeoff and it appears as if he won't fly with Corey. He finally does and the mission is a success, but Tucker is wounded and dies upon the plane's return, leaving Corey to get the girl. Phil Harris sings "The Thing," Bill Ching delivers "The Man Behind the Armor-Plated Desk," with "The U.S. Air Force" and "The Heavy Bomber Song" tossed in for good patriotic measure. The studio had high hopes for this relatively high-budget picture featuring many of its best-known players. Studio head Yates personally produced and, as usual, cast his girl friend (later his wife), Ralston, in the lead. Sadly, the public failed to buy the formula plot. leave a comment
