Comedian Fernandel is a French prisoner of war during WW II who escapes and hides out at an inn run by Carriere. When the war ends, Fernandel decides to stay with her and help her run the inn instead of returning home to his wife. Ten years later Carriere's husband returns, so she sends Fernandel back to his wife, where he finds much has changed in the last decade.
