Antonia De Angelis (Laura Antonelli), a sequestered middle-class housewife, experiences a social and sexual awakening when her husband, Luigi (Marcello Mastroianni), is threatened with arrest for his political activities and forced to seek asylum with a neighbor. Looking over her absent husband's private papers and tracing his steps kindles the frail recluse's interest in his politics, his business activities, and, to her surprise, his philandering. The bosomy Antonia blossoms, virtually assuming the identity of her departed mate--writer of political tracts, philosopher, rakehell. She engages in casual sexual encounters and begins an affair with Dario Favella (Leonard Mann) a dedicated young doctor; meanwhile, closeted in an attic room in the adjacent house, Luigi, with a view of his wife's bedroom, turns unwilling voyeur, witnessing her sexual peccadilloes. Beautiful, muted color photography characterizes this steamy story of a woman's awakening. Antonelli is gorgeous, but, as usual, offers little in the way of acting ability; the talented Mastroianni is wasted in his entirely reactive loneliness. The videocassette is dubbed in English. leave a comment
