This noirish, made-for-TV soap opera was scripted by English mystery specialist Lynda LaPlante, who's best known for the multiple Prime Suspect television mini-series. In 1990, art gallery owner Stein (Colm Feore) paid four thieves to steal a Vermeer from a museum him. Stein avoided arrest, but the theft attracted too much attention for his partners to sell the other paintings they took at the same time. In 2002, mastermind Harry Rawlins (Nigel Bennett) decides to set things right and rehires his partners to rip off Stein, who's been enjoying the Vermeer in the privacy of his gallery’s basement. Stein, who's nobody's fool, hires a crooked cop to derail the robbery by ramming a cement truck into Harry’s getaway van. Only one crook escapes the fiery explosion. After finding a video in Harry’s safety deposit box, his "widow," Dolly (Mercedes Ruehl) realizes Stein's complicity. Dolly meets with all the Shirley (Brooke Shields), Linda (Rosie Perez) and Bella (N’Bushe Wright), the loved ones of Harry's deceased partners, and draws them into a scheme to exact payback. Though none of them is a professional thief, Dolly expects the women to steal back the Vermeer and punish the driver of the lethal cement truck. Dolly is, however, in for a nasty surprise: She learns that not only is her Harry alive, but he has a mistress, a child and his own plans for stealing the Vermeer and fixing Stein's wagon. Can Dolly’s rag-tag gang outwit both Stein and Harry? This complicated melodrama alternates between scenes of female bonding and tough-as-nails criminality; the effect is rather like an Ed McBain mystery adapted into a day-time drama series leave a comment --Robert Pardi
