Cortese, Mitchell, and Baranska are three sisters who might have stemmed from Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in this gothic tale of aging ladies who reside in a house in 1930s Cuba with their one-eyed maidservant, Neal. The arrival from Spain of swinging in-law Oliver and presumed "brother" Zelnik triggers flashbacks of past social and sexual traumas on the part of the hitherto cloistered sisters. The picture proceeds in episodic fashion, detailing the denigration of each character in turn until the final demise of the fragile household structure. A Harold Pinter-like plot with some good, if woefully overacting, players is ruined by utter humorlessness. Producer-director-writer Navarro lost a backer in midshoot and was unable to find a reputable releasing company. Gina Lollobrigida had signed for the role played by Neal but wisely withdrew. Filmed in Spain, the land of low production costs. leave a comment
