This exhaustive indie epic revisits the Civil War to deliver an age-old message about brotherhood. By 1864, the War Between the States was raging at full fury. On the eve of the Battle of the Wilderness, opposing trios bump into each other late at night. Separated from their unit en route to Richmond, Virginia, the Northern stragglers include an officer named John Sunderlin (D.J. Perry), a wounded enlistee named Pete (Mark Lacy) and a scavenging veteran. The Greycoat group comprises Harrison Bolding (Bryan Merrick), a 16 year-old recruit named After Stand Kennedy (Aaron Jackson) and a grizzled war hawk called James Hogg (Terry Jernigan). In the pitch-dark woods, the Southern band converges on the barely visible strangers. After assuming they are also Johnny Rebs, the Confederates offer the Yankees respite. By the campfire, Dixiecrat Bolding bonds with his Abe Lincoln-lovin’ counterpart. After confessing his illiteracy to his newfound friend, Bolding allows Sunderlin to read his letters aloud for him while Hogg tends to Pete’s wounds. At dawn however, when Hogg discovers he has been helping Bluecoats, he growls with rage. Although the two sides had agreed to a temporary truce, Hogg decides to claim the Union threesome as prisoners of war. But his Confederate comrades disagree with his unilateral decision and a fracas breaks out. This soon becomes a moot point: the North and South are marching toward each other and the displaced soldiers are squeezed in from both sides. Can these lost souls escape the crossfire of the impending skirmish? Although it may not be as lavish as COLD MOUNTAIN, this entry in the Civil War subgenre offers crisper editing and more compelling writing than GODS AND GENERALS. Writer-Director Kevin R. Hershberger may linger over preachy points but he also captures the war-weary panic of soldiers who’ve been primed for battle. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
