Cort is sent to a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada, during the depression to serve as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. He has little training for the job and faces many problems. Students prove to be uncooperative, there is no money for his salary, and he grows lonely. Eggar is the
mother of three students who is just as lonesome as Cort. A sensitive film that gives an accurate portrait of depression-era Canada, with its small-town life well detailed and showing how the townspeople survive the harshness of winter. Very human, very warm, and honest enough for universal
appeal.
