Gillard is a bumbling but eager cub reporter for a big newspaper in the 1940s whose dreams are quickly dashed by the hard-bitten reporters who surround him. Leek is another reporter and his main competitor whom he falls hopelessly in love with. His city editor's sexually assertive wife
helps Gillard lose his virginity before he finally impresses Leek by getting drunk and campaigning for the union on the paper. A gentle comedy with some wonderful moments. Gillard projects the right qualities of earnestness and innocence to make his reporter believable in every way. A great
supporting cast, particularly Gage as the seductress, is a definite asset.
