During WW I a group of British soldiers held as POWs by the Germans plot an escape. Hawkins, a newly captured soldier, joins the group in their efforts to tunnel their way to freedom. Osborn, another member, cracks under pressure, forcing the group to leave ahead of schedule. In the end
Hawkins comes to realize that Barnes, the group's leader, is the husband of Hawkins' mistress. Hawkins ultimately is killed, saving the life of the man he has cuckolded in the process. Some tense moments in this war drama make for good viewing. This was a predecessor of many such British war
dramas which were to follow in the next 20 years, and involved men under pressure.
