It's 18th-century Rome, and Ferrari, an improverished chamber pot salesman, tries to raise some money by selling his young brother to the Vatican choir. However the brother escapes, and Ferrari must take his place. Since he doesn't have the beautiful high voice of his young brother, Ferrari faces castration but bribes his way out of this most distressing predicament.
