Deeply in love with its own eccentricity, this grab bag of corrupt politicians and flim-flam operators is a fatuous blend of sentimentality and social satire. A hosiery salesman (Bob Hoskins) cooks up a novel way of improving business: He takes to calling himself Brother Edgar of the fictitious Order of St. Mortimer and uses the suggestion of sanctitiy to sell socks at tractor pulls and country fairs. Crisscrossing the Southwest with illegal alien apprentice Morales Pitman (Antonio Banderas) in tow, Brother Edgar has the misfortune to be held up by a serial killer called the White River Kid (Wes Bentley). Curiously, he feels a certain kinship with the young outlaw and later warns the Kid about policeman closing in at a diner. The Kid and his waitress girlfriend, Apple Lisa Weed (Kim Dickens), hitch a ride with Brother Edgar and insist they head for Apple Lisa's hometown, where Sheriff Becker (Randy Travis), who'd like to apprehend the Kid, is conducting a fundraiser. To Brother Edgar's surprise, Apple Lisa's family home rests on the site of a mine explosion. Sensing an opportunity, Pitman considers legal action against the mining company on the Weeds' behalf and finds a kindred spirit in Apple Lisa's brother, Reggie Weed (Chad Lindberg). Unfortunately, one of Pitman's marks is local businessman Mr. Pines (Michael Massee), Sheriff Becker's campaign manager. Pitman's schemes backfire, the Kid makes plans to retire from crime, and Brother Edgar considers a new partnership with Eva (Ellen Barkin), a local prostitute who pretends to be blind. There's not a believable moment in this shrill, Southwestern Gothic — imagine a TV sit-com penned by a cash-strapped Flannery O'Connor. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
