Returning from a stint in the Air Force, Vincent borrows money to buy a truck, hoping to make enough money hauling produce to marry Lenz and set up housekeeping. Vincent gets a load from Pickens, but then discovers that the long-haul business is run by racketeers and that smuggling is a routine part of the industry. Refusing to participate in such illicit activities, Vincent is beaten by Pickens' thugs. Recovered from the attack, he retaliates by getting a load from Pickens while holding him at gunpoint. Other independent truckers rally to his support, and Pickens relents, giving him more cargo to carry. Big shipping boss Porter, his dominion threatened by the honest, charismatic young trucker, sends thugs to burn Vincent's home, but to no avail; he remains rigidly upright in his moral stance. Porter has the backsliding Pickens killed and, with the help of crooked public prosecutor Armstrong, tries to pin the crime on Vincent. Through all these travails Lenz remains the saintly, supportive wife, concealing her pregnancy from her husband for as long as possible to prevent him from worrying about her. Good wins over evil as Vincent finally singlehandedly reforms the trucking industry in this quick-paced saga of Jack-the-Giant-Killer. Well acted and with excellent truck choreography by the talented stunt crew, the picture is a cut above most little-man-beats-the-system films. This was director Kaplan's first legitimate cinematic effort (before this he had done soft-core sex films such as Roger Corman's NIGHT CALL NURSES [1972] among others). leave a comment
