Natty traffic cop Jory gives a ticket to a politically powerful newspaper publisher (Connolly). Connolly threatens to break the policeman but is given a tongue lashing by his daughter Wray. This will not stop Connolly, who continues to publish anything he wants. He does, however, arrange
for Jory to get promoted and ends up being saved by him when an embezzler harmed by Connolly's yellow journalism enters his office with a gun. Later Wray is implicated in murder and arrested by Jory. Connolly is forced to print the story. Jory, now demoted due to Connolly's string pulling, goes
after the murderer himself. WHITE LIES was produced after an agreement between the Hays Office and the Crime Commission in Washington DC that all movie policemen should be given a dignified portrayal. This film quickly espoused the new philosophy, making Jory a Yale graduate, snappy dresser,
classical music lover, flower enthusiast, and attentive to his legal duties. It's a good thing no one at the Hays Office was able to see SERPICO or PRINCE OF THE CITY, which could have caused the censors cardiac arrest.
