In 1877, the Cheyenne are persuaded to withdraw peacefully from their Wyoming hunting grounds to make way for white settlers. Army colonel Lund is put in charge of the resettlement. He is helped by surveyor Wagner, whose friendship with young Indian stalwarts Hunter and O'Brian is of great assistance. Indian maiden Paget, betrothed to Hunter, develops a yen for Wagner; this threatens the success of the resettlement campaign. The resentful Cheyenne forswear their friendship with Wagner and launch an arrow with a white feather attached as a sign that they intend to do battle with the whole cavalry troop. Wagner persuades his former friends to settle the matter in single combat, and when O'Brian stoops to treachery in combat, Franz shoots him. Hunter is reconciled with Wagner through the intervention of Paget, then charges the line of soldiers, who kill him. There is a beautiful scene in which Wagner lays out Hunter's body for proper Indian burial. Resigned to their fate, the Indians trek on to their reservation. Paget reprises the type of role she had in BROKEN ARROW (1950). The Indians are treated with considerable sympathy in this film, which is interesting despite its tepid direction. leave a comment
