One of the most famous "unseen" films, WHITE DOG never got a theatrical run in the US even though it had a well-known cast, a legendary director, and a powerful subject--racism. Kristy McNichol plays Julie Sawyer, a young actress who adopts a beautiful white stray dog. When a rapist breaks into Julie's home, the dog, which has been playful and gentle up to this, attacks and nearly tears the man limb from limb before the police arrive. The beautiful dog, she learns, has been trained to kill Blacks. A Black animal-trainer, Keys (Paul Winfield), begins an attempt to recondition the dog, although Carruthers (Burl Ives), who runs the training center, maintains that it can never be completely broken of its desire to kill. In the meantime, Julie meets the person who trained the dog in the first place. The rights the award-winning novella by Romain Gary on which the film is based were bought by Paramount 10 years before production began. Once the movie was made, the studio got cold feet, fearing that the volatile subject would incite racial controversy, although Sam Fuller's film is anything but racist. When WHITE DOG finally opened in Paris and London it was hailed as a masterpiece by some critics. The film finally did show up on cable television in January of 1984, in a re-edited version from Paramount that foolishly turned the dog from a killer to one that merely bites. leave a comment
