One of the best Polish directors, Krzysztof Zanussi, fell short of the mark with this soulless examination of the days preceding the German invasion of Poland. Sands and Soutendijk are a recently married couple--he a Uruguayan of German-English extraction, she a Briton. In Poland to look after some family business concerns, they visit the country estate of a friend, where Soutendijk is thrown from a horse and nearly dies. She recovers physically, but is mentally scarred, a situation which Sands only makes worse with his cruelty. As Soutendijk's condition deteriorates, Sands finds that his factory is involved with Germany's plans to conquer Poland. It is almost impossible to like this film because its main character, Sands, is without and redeeming qualities. Photographed in warm, golden, sunsetlike colors, Zanussi's work seems to hint at the restriction of Polish freedom that was in the offing, but his story never manages to be anything but annoying. leave a comment
