This whimsical musical fantasy with songs by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin is fairly pleasant, if silly, fare. Bill (Fred MacMurray) would like to sign up and fight in WW II, but minor physical problems keep him out, so he does the next best thing and goes to work for the USO. Idly polishing a lamp donated in a scrap drive one day, Bill is surprised to discover that the item harbors a genie (Gene Sheldon). The genie's magic is pretty rusty, however, and he grants Bill's wish to join the service by sending him back in time to revolutionary America under the command of George Washington (Alan Mowbray). Bill is subsequently whisked even further back, winding up on the "Santa Maria" with Christopher Columbus (Fortunio Bonanova) and later bargaining with a Native American chief (Anthony Quinn) to obtain Manhattan Island for $24. One constant in his travels is the presence of two women (June Haver and Joan Leslie) who compete for his affections in each new time frame. The interference of a visitor from the future threatens to alter history, of course, so it's a relief for the genie when he finally gets Bill back to the 20th century and into the Marines. The tunes include: "Morale," "If Love Remains," "All at Once," "Song of the Rhineland," "Christopher Columbus," and "The " Nina", the "Pinta", and the "Santa Maria"." Good color and some fine special effects help keep this afloat. leave a comment
