When You'Re Smiling: Review
A modest plot was the excuse for even more modest musical numbers, with only the appearances of such talents as Crosby, Laine, and the Mills Brothers to highlight them. Courtland is a cowpoke who comes to Hollywood with remote thoughts of getting into show business. Cowan is an owner of a recording company on the financial edge because of the boss's yen for gambling. Mistaking Courtland for a Texas millionaire, Cowan attempts to hitch him up with his daughter. But it doesn't take; the cowboy falls for Albright and becomes a recording star in the process. Songs include: "When You're Smiling" (Mark Fisher, Joe Goodwin, Larry Shay, sung by Frankie Laine, Jerome Courtland, the Modernaires), "That Old Black Magic" (Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, sung by Billy Daniels), "When the Wind Was Green" (Don Hunt, sung by Jerome Courtland), "Georgia on My Mind" (Stuart Garrell, Hoagy Carmichael, sung by Frankie Laine), "Up a Lazy River" (Sidney Arodin, Hoagy Carmichael, sung by the Mills Brothers), "Deed I Do" (Walter Hirsch, Fred Rose, sung by Billy Daniels), "Juke Box Saturday Night" (Al Stillman, Paul McGrane, sung by the Modernaires), "Mama Goes Where Papa Goes" (sung by Kay Starr), "If You Can't Get a Drum with a Boom, Boom, Boom" (performed by Bob Crosby and His Bobcats).
