When a producer is looking for assured success at the box office, it's usually a safe bet to take some tried and true material, give it modern settings and situations, and release it to the public as something new. Katzman did just that by taking twice-made GIRL CRAZY, (once with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland), inserting some then-popular tunes and old favorites, and having Francis and Presnell try to duplicate the energy of their predecessors. The result was a far cry from the originals but not without merit, with ingeniously conceived comic routines and exceptional music performances. The plot is pure hokum. Presnell plays a millionaire trying to escape the clutches of a money-grabbing chorus girl by fleeing to Nevada. He meets Francis, who has a dad with a gambling habit so bad that he almost loses their broken-down ranch. Presnell comes up with the bright idea of converting the ranch into a place for divorcees to while away their time while waiting for their quickie divorces to go through. Songs include: "But Not for Me" (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, sung by Connie Francis, Harve Presnell), "I Got Rhythm" (Gershwin, Gershwin, sung by Francis, Presnell, Louis Armstrong), "Bidin' My Time" (Gershwin, Gershwin, sung by Herman's Hermits), "Embraceable You" (Gershwin, Gershwin, sung by Presnell), "Treat Me Rough" (Gershwin, Gershwin, sung by Sue Anne Langdon), "When the Boys Meet the Girls" (Jack Keller, Howard Greenfield, sung by Francis), "Mail Call" (Fred Karger, Ben Weisman, Sid Wayne, sung by Francis), "Monkey See, Monkey Do" (Johnny Farrow, sung by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs), "Listen People" (Graham Gouldman, sung by Herman's Hermits), "Throw it Out of Your Mind" (Armstrong, Billy Kyle, performed and sung by Armstrong), "It's All in Your Mind" (sung by the Standells), and "Aruba" (Liberace, played by Liberace). Louis Armstrong plays with Tyree Glenn (trombone), Buster Bailey (clarinet), Billy Kyle (piano), Buddy Catlett (bass), and Danny Barcelona (drums). leave a comment
