Nearly naked prehistoric ladies wearing push-up bras and animated anachronisms are the major features of this follow-up to Hammer's last venture into prehistory, ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966). The Venus-like Vetri's golden tresses are blamed by her Rock Tribe elders for an eruption of the sun which causes the moon to break away from it. Condemned to be sacrificed to appease the creator of this unlikely natural phenomenon, Vetri leaps from a cliff into the sea. Rescued by muscular fisherman Hawdon and his Sand Tribe cohorts, she is again threatened when the pursuing Rock chief forms an alliance with the Sand Tribe. When Vetri takes refuge within a dinosaur eggshell, the appropriate maternal bonding ensues, and Vetri finds herself regarded as part of a mother dinosaur's brood. Protected by the saurian, she is found by the lovestruck Hawdon, who joins her for a happy romp. Returning to his people, Hawdon is menaced for his affiliation with Vetri and sentenced to the stake. In the nick of time the orbiting gaseous solar breakaway solidifies to become the moon, creating a monstrous tidal wave. Vetri, Hawdon, and another pair of young lovers are the sole survivors. With a total of 27 coined words, the picture isn't exactly dialog heavy. Vetri, who inherited the mantle of Carole Landis and Raquel Welch, was known as Angela Dorian when she was Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Year in 1968. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Special Effects. leave a comment
