This picture stirred quite a controversy when first released. Italy refused to have it shown within its borders, while just about every place else required that the shearing scissors go to work. It`s a horror flick that relies almost totally on eerie atmosphere, including the shady personalities of Lee and Lavi. Lee plays the son of a wealthy count. The count forces Lee to flee when a servant girl commits suicide after being seduced by the young man. When good son Kendall is about to marry Lavi, he asks Lee to return to the castle. Lee immediately tries to seduce his brother's new wife, going so far as to whip her when he discovers her alone on the beach. After Lee is murdered and several other bodies pop up, the locals suspect supernatural forces are at work, namely that Lee has continued with his terrorizing even after death. A shock ending discloses that Lavi was really the person responsible for all the violence. Just about everyone who worked on this production did so under a pseudonym, which may be some indication of censorship problems and the resulting mutilation of the original. leave a comment
