A very intelligent picture that needs to be looked at closely in order to fathom some of its subtleties. David Hare, the playwright of PLENTY, wrote and directed this film, and it's a corker. Wetherby is a small, cold town in Yorkshire. Jean Travers (Vanessa Redgrave) is a local teacher who never married. Her teenage crush was killed in Malaya in the 1950s, and she has never gotten over it. Jean is having a small dinner party in her home for two couples, Stanley (Ian Holm) and Marcia Piborough (Judi Dench), and Roger (Tom Wilkinson) and Verity Braithwaite (Marjorie Yates). When John Morgan (Tim McInnerny) shows up, Jean assumes that he is with one of the couples and they assume that he is a friend of hers. He is neither. The following day, Morgan comes by Jean's home, has a pleasant chat, then, without a bit of warning and apparently no motivation, puts a gun in his mouth and blows his brains out. It is an incredibly shocking moment. The movie flits in the present, the recent past, and sometime in the early 1950s. Hare uses an intriguing technique as he keeps going back to the seemingly ordinary dinner party in memory, and we realize that what we saw before was only the tip of the iceberg. To give away the answer to this enigma might be a disservice to anyone who likes to use his noodle. There are more questions asked than answered in this movie, but the mental gymnastics are well worth the effort. The performances are all first-rate as well, including that of Joely Richardson, Redgrave's daughter with director Tony Richardson, as the young Jean. leave a comment
