A kinder, gentler GOING PLACES. Traveling shoe salesman Paco (Sergi Lopez) has an easy way with women and a back seat full of shoe samples. Scrappy, lovelorn Russian hitchhiker Nino (Sacha Bourdo) nicks Paco's car and all his gear after Paco gives him a lift. Stranded in the middle of the French countryside, Paco is rescued by Marinette (Elisabeth Vitali), who first takes him to the police, then to her place. Early the next morning, Paco spots Nino in town, chases him down and beats him into a weeklong hospital stay. A friendship gradually develops from this inauspicious start: Paco feels somewhat grateful to Nino for putting him in Marinette's way, even as Marinette gets cold feet and suggests that she and Paco spend three weeks apart before rushing into anything serious. So Paco allows Nino to convince him they should hit the road together: Maybe Paco can help the unlucky Nino find a woman of his own. What follows is a interesting reversal of fortunes, as two men who at first seem utterly different gradually shift places: Paco's life becomes increasingly uprooted while Nino's begins to gain stability. Director Manuel Poirier has no grand statement to make about the nature of life and love, except perhaps that one can be very hard without the other. Full of personal encounters and subtle observations, it's all episodic in the grand tradition of road movies. And while Poirier's gentle touch is part of the film's overall charm, it's also what may lead some to find the whole journey a little draggy. Nevertheless, it's a good way to spend a couple of hot summer afternoon hours: It's often very funny, the acting is fine and the gorgeous CinemaScope cinematography manages to capture all the raw beauty of Brittany without ever coming off as pretty-pretty. leave a comment --Ken Fox
