Karloff stars in this third remake of the Porter Emerson Browne play which had been filmed silently in 1923, then again in 1930, both under the title THE BAD MAN. While those two were set in Mexico with a bandit named Pancho Lopez as the kind-hearted title character, WEST OF SHANGHAI tried to capitalize on a rising interest in the East because of the Sino-Japanese war and transposed the story to that area.
