West Of The Pecos

1935, Movie, NR, 68 mins

An unusually sexual western for its time which has Sleeper masquerading in boy's clothes while traveling through post-Civil War Texas. Dix thinks her a man until one day he has to rescue her from the Pecos River. Her clinging wet apparel is a dead giveaway for Dix, who agrees to keep her secret. An even odder scene occurs when Alba, interested in the masculine version of Sleeper, makes a not-to-subtle pass at the girl. The idea is no different than that of a picture like TOOTSIE (1982) which probably raised just as many eyebrows as WEST OF THE PECOS. The story, which in comparison seems elementary, has Dix trying his darndest to restore peace to the lawless Pecos region. Based on a novel by Zane Grey and remade in 1945 with Robert Mitchum and Barbara Hale. leave a comment
