GOODFELLAS it ain't, and the best that can be said for this low-budget tale of wiseguys and crooked cops west of the Hudson River is that it really isn't trying to be. Frank Vincent -- a bit player from a number of Martin Scorsese films -- stars as Tom Coletti, a recovering alcoholic ex-cop who now works for a New Jersey bank, overseeing the shredding of resold corporate bonds. But Tom isn't as clean as he should be: He's been helping himself to the certificates, which he then sells to a Latino gang through a fence. When the mob gets wind of the scam, the local don (Vincent Pastore), angry that they've been cut out of the action, orders a hit on the fence, leaving Tom to deal directly with the gangsters who are now demanding another $25 million in stolen bonds. For help, Tom turns to Jimmy (Gian DiDonna), another former cop who also happens to be the ex-boyfriend of Tom's daughter Diane (Gloria Darpino). Diane, it turns out, is now married to Frank (Brian McCormack), a crooked cop on the edge who's been assigned to the fence murder, and... well, it gets even more complicated than that. Director and cowriter Phil Gallo tries to ground this routine drama of a good man who crosses the line and gets caught in the middle, in characterization rather than action. It's an admirable attempt, but he overdoes it: This thing has more interconnected characters than your average soap opera, each with an extensive back-story, and it's distracting and exhausting. To make matters worse, the dialogue is often weak, and no one here really has the acting chops needed to make something like this hum. leave a comment --Ken Fox
