Focusing on the plight of those left behind when the men went off to fight in WWII, writer-producer David O. Selnick's adaptation of Margaret Buell Wilder's letters to her soldier husband was a smash hit. More than 50 years later, it still holds up as marvellous, moving entertainment. The film focuses on the wartime life of Claudette Colbert and her two daughters (Jennifer Jones and a teenage Shirley Temple) after Colbert's husband leaves his family and his job to go off to fight in the war.
