Jam-packed with non sequiturs and deliberately offensive gags, this scrap of aggressive Australian whimsy is a little hard to stomach. Teddy (Jonathan Schaech) is a New York City con man whose luck has obviously run out: He's beaten up in a Times Square alley by loan sharks, and his extremely rare Australian cockatoos are shot to smithereens. To avoid his cranky creditors, Teddy absconds to the Land Down Under. Bopping through the Outback in his Volkswagen camper, Teddy picks up several hitchhikers, including the scrumptious Angie (Susie Porter). Sparks fly as Teddy and Angie wend their way through the countryside, and PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT director Stephan Elliott delights in showing their vigorous romps. When they reach the sea, Angie demands that Teddy marry her, and next thing he knows, Teddy's bound to a bed in the bizarro town of Woop Woop. Smack in the middle of Australia, it's literally the land that time forgot, run by Angie's domineering father Daddy-O (Rod Taylor), who decrees that the local caravan trash must watch endless loops of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. That's when they're not manufacturing Woof Woof, a premium dog food made from kangaroos and roadkill or hunted down by the enterprising locals. Needless to say, good sex with Angie notwithstanding, Teddy is anxious to get the hell out of town. But anyone who tries to leave is shot like a dog. In fact, dogs are shot like dogs. Further complications ensue when Teddy starts to fall for Angie's schoolmarm sister Krystal (Dee Smart). Granted, none of this is really supposed to make any sense. But if a hyperbolic emphasis on the grotesque, coupled with the conspicuous display of wacky for wacky's sake sound trying, you should probably take a detour around Woop Woop. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
