It's not clever or hip and it certainly isn't fun, but this jagged, melancholy drama about war correspondents in 1992 Sarajevo lives up to its brutal commitment to remind viewers that war is always hell. Adapted from Natasha's Story, English television-journalist Michael Nicholson's memoir of his decision to abandon a lifelong commitment to journalistic detachment and rescue one child from the agonizing disintegration of Yugoslavia, this fiercely heartfelt film revolves around three journalists: Michael Henderson (Stephen Dillane, playing Nicholson's fictional counterpart), Jane Carson (Kerry Fox) and Flynn (Woody Harrelson). A veteran of the world's hot spots, Henderson finds himself uncharacteristically moved by the plight of a ragtag group of orphans whose precarious sanctuary is suddenly on the front line, and he becomes particularly friendly with a youngster named Emira (Emira Nusevic). As the conflict escalates, Henderson commits himself to getting Emira out of the country, even if it means smuggling her home with him. Bleak, darkly humorous and surprisingly unsentimental, Michael Winterbottom's film has the desperate air of a cri de coeur, and unlike many fiction films about war, its use of real-life footage seems in no way inappropriate or exploitative. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
