1985, Movie, PG-13, 94 mins

WEIRD SCIENCE is a complete turnaround for writer-director John Hughes, a puerile comedy that relies on scatological humor and special effects to carry its weight. Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan M. Mitchell-Smith) are two geeky high school freshmen whose prurience is surpassed only by their social ineptitude. The two take refuge in science fiction, computer technology, and their own hormonally inspired fantasies. After watching FRANKENSTEIN on the late, late sho... read more leave a comment

January 18, 2007: Playthings

Playthings is probably the closest a Season 2 episode has come to a Season 1 standalone episode The first half of this season just had a different feel to it Because of the death of Big Daddy Winchester each episode was blanketed in grief as well as mucho mucho angst Ive pretty much loved most of these episodes especially In My Time of Dying Crossroad Blues and Croatoan but the cases they tackled felt different because the boys were also in the midst of mourning as well as expanding their universe with the introduction of the Roadhouse crew With Croatoan and Hunted the angst evolved into the secret and Sams destiny which will probably take us on out through the rest of the season I would imagine And while there was definitely Sam angst laced throughout the entire episode there was also a lot of humor and enough cute brotherly moments to satisfy any Supernatural fan They were researching in their hotel room together walking down halls investiga read more

Bill Paxton Is Feeling the Love

What's a fella to do when he has Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and (that's right, and) Ginnifer Goodwin for wives (other than invest in Hallmark stock, that is)? Big-screen star Bill Paxton talks with TV Guide about getting some real action as a Viagra-popping polygamist in HBO's new dramedy Big Love (Sundays at 10 pm/ET). TV Guide: You're a big-screen actor with a solid career who's never done a TV series. Why make the exception for Big Love? Bill Paxton: What I saw right away was that this was a brilliant way to take an alternative lifestyle as far out there as polygamy and use it as a prism to examine contemporary society and mores. read more

Big Love I've come to realize...

Big Love I've come to realize that as much as I worry that I watch too much TV to feel adequately optimistic about the medium, I still turn on a new HBO show hoping they've scored another Sopranos or Deadwood and not just an Arliss. Never mind that I want to see Bill Paxton in something good. I have a soft spot for the guy, since pretty much every male of a certain age can, like myself, recite line after line of him as Chet in Weird Science, and as "Game over!" space Marine Hudson in Aliens. And that's not even mentioning other great stuff like One False Move and read more

What was the strange and ...

Question: What was the strange and funky show on HBO that was a sort of risqué sci-fi anthology à la The Outer Limits and Twilight Zone? It had a CGI female robot host. The name of it is totally escaping me and all my friends.

Answer: Sounds like you're thinking of Perversions of Science, a sci-fi-oriented offering from the people who brought you HBO's Tales from the Crypt. As you say, the hostess was a buxom animated android. The lady's name was Chrome and she was voiced by actress Maureen Teefy.

Based on EC Comics' Weird Science, the show featured a pilot episode with a notably apt title, "Dream of Doom." Perversi read more
