A trenchant murder drama that is mixed with a sufficiently convincing tale about lynch mob fury. Waters joins a posse determined to catch a Polish immigrant farmhand whom they believe killed a rancher's wife. The mob is led by police sergeant Roberts, whose sole purpose in hunting down the fugitive is to regain his stature as a cop after he had caused the deaths of two youngsters. The men in the posse, on the hunt for the weekend, soon grow weary, a condition hurried along by their drunkenness. Waters finds himself identifying with the supposed criminal and is eventually the one to defend the man's innocence. Keenly directed and with a fresh conception of its characters, this Australian entry has universal appeal. leave a comment
