Writer-director Carl Seaton's promising debut is a romantic comedy grounded in a dead-serious premise. Five days before his wedding, Varon Thomas (Kenny Young) gets a scary piece of news from the community health center: His name has come up on a certain client's "partner notification" list, meaning Varon has had sexual contact with someone who recently tested positive for an sexually transmitted disease. And in this case, the STD is HIV. Varon immediately takes an HIV test, but the results won't be back from the lab for another week — two days after he's due to get married. State law prohibits the clinic from disclosing the client's name, but Varon has an idea who it might be: a recent indiscretion named Tasha (Milauna Jemai). Tasha denies having HIV and it looks like she's telling the truth; meanwhile, Tyco (Eric Lane), Varon's best friend who's been camping out on Varon's couch for the past six months and is coincidentally awaiting the results of his own HIV test, convinces Varon not to tell his fiancée, Kiya (Saadiqa Muhammad), until he's certain of his status. What follows is a waiting game of the cruelest sort; luckily, a series of entirely unrelated mishaps occur to take Varon's mind off his biggest worry: the banquet hall where the reception is scheduled to take place falls through, and instead of getting the promotion he's been angling for, Varon is fired. Mixing comedy and romance with such a grave subject is a dicey proposition, but Seaton gets the balance just right. The film is often very funny, but the humor never detracts from the seriousness of the overall situation, and it all ends on a surprisingly sobering note that's beautifully handled. The camerawork is crude and the editing seems almost accidental, but it's really all about the writing, which is strong throughout; Seaton has a sharp ear for convincingly conversational dialogue. He's also fortunate enough to have found a smart, talented cast to bring the language to life. leave a comment --Ken Fox
