A young woman is murdered during a WW II air raid over Liverpool. Lee is named the killer and sentenced to life in prison. He is spared the death sentence because the prosecution can find no reason he should have committed the crime and because a religious, wealthy ship tycoon (Williams) takes up the cudgel on Lee's behalf. Twenty years later, Johnson (Lee's son) arrives from the US where he and his mother had emigrated. Johnson has believed that his father died nobly during the war and now he learns that's not the case at all. He attempts to visit Lee in the slammer but is prevented by miles of red tape.
