Barthelmess is cast as a gangster who winds up in jail after another crook squeals on him. While in prison, Barthelmess discovers a knack for singing. He joins the prison band and takes his jailhouse routines to the top of the charts. The governor, impressed with his voice and his amiable personality, arranges for his release. A good excuse to use sound, but after hearing the same tune warbled three times, one wishes Barthelmess' voice could be turned off. Director Frank Lloyd won a Best Director Oscar in 1929 for his work on three releases that year, this film, DRAG, and the silent THE DIVINE LADY. leave a comment
